We just got back from Bozman, Montana. Spent 8 days with our son and his wife. Went down hill skiing, xc skiing and soaked in hot springs, slept in a National Forest cabin after xc skiing to it. One of the highlights was seeing a pack of wolves in Yellowstone National Park....we counted 8 of them and it looked like they were stalking something but we could not see what it was. The biggest wolf was a huge black one...looked like two black labs together!
Hey, have we declared a winner for the "first ice of the season"?? I want the $500 prize that Phil is giving the winner!
By the way Phil, "the days are getting longer"!
I do hope you get your fix with the ice though.
Happy 2012 to all!
Tori

Ice is really gonna take a beatin' today! 31 degrees and breezy @ 5:00 am. Forecast looks fairly cold after this with some chilly nights ahead.

The real problem is the 5-8" of white crap that is coming tonite. If the ice holds up and the snow dumps on top, it's going to ruin the ice-making machine for quite some time. :x

Phil,
Will the snow act as insulation on the thin ice and more ice will not form?

Tori,

The snow will insulate the ice and prevent it from being a lot colder than freezing hence the ice stays the same or grows a lot slower. Given the goofy weather we are having the snow might be blown off the ice or melted by some rain and then re-freeze.

Maybe ice breaking and use of a boat for fishing this year?

15 and dropping - I'm betting on some decent ice by the weekend, in places. Didn't get the snow that was forecast, thank goodness.

Tori- Bozeman Mt. Yeah buddy. 20 years ago, after high school, I packed my jeep and headed to Bozeman with two freinds to "Ski Bum" for a year. Bridger Bowl, Chico Hot Springs, Paridise Valley and West Yellowstone, Good Times. Nice to hear you enjoyed all that Montana has to ofter. For those who have not traveled west don't know what they are missing. We were their when they filmed "A River Runs Through It", Livingston I believe. Schu

is there something about the ice that trigger fish?? Not trying to be a wise guy, I'm honestly wondering. To me it sounds like there's been no fishing for the last last 2 months but now there's guys out on thin ice (no pun intented). It looks like they could have casted from from the shore last week and fished the same spot.

I would like to know how thick the ice is. Notice they are very close to the shoreline. :) It must be adrenalin that has them out there, it is only 15 degrees. Good luck to all you Ice fisherman.
