Normal water level

Post by 3wisem » Sat Oct 16, 2010 4:45 pm

Thought with the high water why not have some fun with it. The forum always plays the game of ice out/in, so let's guess when the lake will return to a normal water level. We can base it on the dock in cam 2 that is under water; first one on left. Normal would be below the bottom of the dock.

I would have to say Oct 27. Hopefully we don't  get much more rain. I should have read it before I submitted it. we all ready have webbed feet from so much rain. I just pray we don't get the snow like we have had rain lately..

Why do you want "much more rain" ? Just curious.

water level to normal

Post by wwb3occ » Wed Oct 20, 2010 10:09 am

Here at the Ogdensburg dam the water level is still 16" above normal. It has been dropping about an inch per day as long as it does not rain. That dock looks like it needs to drop a good foot or more. My guess would be early November when the water level in the lake is at normal levels.
I also still have one flood gate still full open which is another 3 inches up if I close it. so it could be a while yet.

So what do YOU consider normal water level, there at the dam? Is it when the water is at the top of the dam and not overflowing? Like you are using all the water for making power?

The top of our dam is 258.000 feet above sea level. We keep it at that level without spilling over the top. Any water over the top of the dam would be less revenue for our company. We have a minimum flow we have to release through the plant of 334 cfs per the Fed gov. to keep the lower river flowing.

Water Levels

Post by ranger617 » Thu Nov 18, 2010 6:49 pm

I'm new to Black Lake and was really surprised at how high the water levels were in October. In any given year, how much does the lake water levels fluctuate? I had heard 6-8 ft?

I grew up living on the Hudson River where we had daily tidal changes of nearly 5 ft.

I was also surprised at how rough the lake gets. But when it's calm, it's spectacular!

Anybody looking for a small (15ft) sailboat, let me know.
