Nice catch bigmouth. I was out today and managed just 8 craps. Pretty slow for me today.
With the forecast, I think we have a good chance of keeping ice to end of pike season. :D I think it may be one of those years where, on the last day of pike season, I can fish on Black Lake ice in the AM and out of the boat on the St. Lawrence in the PM. Maybe I'll get few of those days in this year. 8)

Heard today from some friends near Syracuse. Two adults and six youngsters were stranded on an ice sheet that broke away from shore started drifting. Someone noticed and launched their row boat, rescuing sue of them before emergency services got there. A 4-wheeler and ice shanty were left on the sheet at that time. I have not heard any more.

Looks like a very short ice season for those on Oneida Lake. I never did get there this season.
Hoping for a couple more weeks on Black lake.

Some people near me are saying "making ice". I've been saying "no way! that's breaking ice." The surface looks like a spiderweb! Be careful out there!!

I've spent the last three days on the lake fishing through the ice. The ice is in better shape now than it has been all winter. Not to mean it can't turn in a hurry but it's solid on the South end. There are some nasty pressure ridges out there to beware of though. The shore is generally good and easy getting on. Today I was on the North end out from the big bay cam and it's 12" and solid there as well.
One real problem - the fishing is SLOW! Hope to see it pick up towards the end of the ice season.
For such a strange weather pattern this winter it sure has been a good season for ice fishing. :D

Woe unto you, killers of the winter pike. This is why there are not more good fish to be got by casting in May-June, September-October. Those of the cult of the pike must raise up their rods in protest; and end the slaughter. Drive them from above the winter lairs so the pike may spawn in the spring. Let them eat trout; let them hunt gills. No more shall they kill the spotted snake.
