1st Timers coming to Black Lake

Post by Diego » Sat Aug 23, 2014 12:47 pm

Bringing my 21 year old son and his cousin to Black Lake next weekend. He has wanted to come for many years. We are staying at a little cottage on the lake. How is the fishing now? He is a catch and release guy and has good success in the last week here on the Susquehanna around Harrisburg, PA. As long as they can catch something they will be very happy. The early weather report doesn't look the best but it is a week away. Does some rainy conditions change the way the fish bite? Any info greatly appreciated. Thank you again

I've found cloudy, overcast, rainy the best. Add a little chop to the water then it is excellent. Sunny, hot, calm flat conditions are the toughest.

Last weekend the topwater bite using a surface buzzbait was spectacular the last hour before dusk by rocky shorelines and islands. Caught 15 bass up to 3 lbs in 1 hour around Pin Island, Devils graveyard the night before produced similar results. Nothing like hearing that lure clacking then wham Fish on!!!

We are staying at Black Lake Marine Cottages in or around Hammond. Getting excited for our first trip to the lake. Not familiar at all with the lake or the surrounding areas or towns. Hope to find a couple good spots. Thanks for all your info.

Some good advice for this lake is to slow down and don't move around too much. If you find a spot that looks "fishy", it probably is.

This fish in Black Lake are really spread out. You can catch at least something just about everywhere.

If you aren't catching anything, it's usually better to change your technique than change spots.

Try everything until you find what they want. Topwater, crankbaits, small jigs, big jigs, tubes, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, or even small spoons will all work .... at the right time.

This is such a fun lake to experiment on and figure things out.
