Fishing report 9/15 to 9/22

Post by bluschen » Mon May 23, 2011 8:38 pm

Sunday- Arrived at the southern end of the lake to find it so rough with 25 Knot winds out of the NE that we could not launch the boats. Water levels were about 4-5 feet higher than I have seen before with 3-4 foot rollers and whitecaps.

Monday- More of the same weather with one of the guys in the camp losing his motor when the aluminum camp boat he was using was swamped and sunk at the dock.

Tuesday- Rough weather again, so we took one of our boats to Muskellunge lake (20 minutes away outside of Teresa) and did really well fishing for Crappie with minnows around the various island rocky edges. The folks at Earls camp were very accommodating and let us leave the boat docked overnight for 10 bucks.

Wednesday- Black lake was fish-able but since our boat was still at Muskellunge we fished there and again did very well with the crappie and perch.

Thursday through Saturday- Finally got onto Black lake....the winds had calmed down to calm easterly winds @ 3-5 knots and the Pike fishing was sporadic at best for the next couple days, hitting our Mepps #5 spinners, silver or white blades did the best ...without the buck-tails. By fishing slow and deliberately letting the lures sink to the depth of the weed tops we picked up 18 fish with the largest at 28 inches over the three days. I did hear Sunday that some of the guys in neighboring cabins pounded them pretty good deep into Lonesome bay by the school bus. Crappie Fishing was excellent during these days and we concentrated at the southwestern edges of the Lake where the woods were flooded wit 3-5 feet of water. Several boats we talked too limited out with forays 10-50 yards into the woods with small boats fishing small groups of trees picking up 2-3 fish before moving to the next clump of brush/trees. Small jigs, pink/white with minnows on bobbers were doing the trick.

Overall the fishing was good... but past years have been better. The higher water levels appeared to make finding the fish a little more difficult but spending the time and using a little ingenuity put a positive spin on the rough weather. Best of luck to you all and fish safe.... we will be up again at the end of September.

Till then... keep the reports coming
Brian
