8-26 to 8-28 Fishing Report

Post by ken18621 » Mon Aug 29, 2011 7:34 pm

We just got back from a banner 3 days of fishing.

8-26

3 of us went out for a guided trip with Randy from guidedbasstrips around 7 am. We set up on a point I started throwing senkos and the other 2 guys were using shiners. It didnt take long for them to start hammering one largemouth after another. I picked up a few on senkos as well. We moved to several locations through out the morning with pretty consistant action. when we went in for lunch the total was around 27 bass. After lunch Randy anchored us up on a shoal and we fished with bait for smallies. Again, it didnt take long for us to start getting the smallies. The highlight for Eric was a fat 20" smallie with a 14"girth that he is getting a replica mount done.I had got the largest of the day with a 24" LM that ate a senko.(truth be told that Eric's smallie was a greater treasure). We finished the day out with 63 bass and 2 northerns.

8-27

The 3 of us headed out about 8 after some boat issues and headed to some areas that we fished last year and also places that Randy showed us the day before. It didnt take long for the bass to turn on and there were smiles all around the boat. One of the spots we fished was the shoal that Eric caught the big smallie on the day before. Using live bait we landed no less than 15 smallmouth all over 14" including 3@18" and 1@ 18.5". We finished off the day with 59 bass and 1 northern.

8-28

Hurricaine Irene ...... Irene who..............

We are not fair weather fishermen....might not be the brightest either. We woke up to windy weather and looked on the lake to see a parade of boats speeding north, a tournement perhaps?..... nope..... they were heading to the state launch to get their boats out of the water before the peak of the storm hit. We get our rain suits on and get on the water...... lets just say that it was a stiff wind. We headed across the lake to find a sheltered cove or bay. Again, it didnt take long for the senko bite to turn on. Not the quality of fish as the previous 2 days but we managed a few up to 18".We managed 14 bass and 2 northerns when we headed in for an extended lunch. What an experience the ride back was.(24 hours later I still have sea legs when I stand up.)
After eating lunch at Busters in Ogdinsburg (very good food) we headed back to the cabin and looked at the lake. I checked the wind forecast and we made the decision to head back out fishing. We rode across the lake and found upper deep bay to be quite calm and fished senkos there until 7, doing pretty good but the quality of the bass were smaller with a few nice ones mixed in. Not knowing how rough the main lake was we decided to head in so we would have enough time to get in before dark. As we headed between the points near devils graveyard and noticed the main lake was calmer than earlier ,we were quite relieved.

We crossed the lake with no problems and had time to drift some crayfish in front of Pleasant View. As we looked back across the lake we saw a double rainbow.
The totals for day 3 were 32 bass and 3 northerns (including a 29" northern I caught in front of Indian Point cabins).

I dont know if the storm had anything to do with our success but we all came to the conclusion that if we didnt go out with Randy on the first day, we wouldnt have caught the numbers or quality that we did. Thanks again Randy for another memorable trip.

Totals for 3 days/3 guys

154 Bass (70% LM 30% SM)

6 Northerns

1 rock bass

1 crappie

1 bluegill that swallowed a crayfish on a size 1 wacky hook.

ALL FISH WERE RELEASED TO BE CAUGHT ANOTHER DAY :D

I managed to do fairly well but couldn't seem to get on the big ones, next year perhaps. The fish are there, just gotta find them! Congrats on the nice catch!

Not enough vacation time left for a trip there this year unfortunately.
And next year I'm already scheduled for a 2 week cruise with my wife.
That won't leave much time left, but I will get up there.
If even only for a long weekend.
