2012-2013 ice fishing season

Post by markz5 » Mon Dec 10, 2012 10:56 am

I was just wondering when first ice is up there, I'm planning a first ice trip up from Rochester and I was hoping that someone could help me out in finding a place that is good for early season ice fishing. Thanks

No ice - yet. Generally speaking - I find that good first ice is usually the week after XMAS. Sometimes sooner.

I heard the fishing in front of Black Lake Marine is pretty good.

I was thinking of making a trip up around the 28th of December does anyone know where the best first ice fishing is or even if there will be enough ice to make the trip worth it?

Well, if I could answer those questions with "authority", I would not have to "work" for a living. :big-grin:
My best guess is: yes, we normally have fishable ice at that time.
and there are "few" areas of public access to the lake.
What kind of fishing do you do? and what kind of fish are you wanting to target?
Two areas that are accessible come to mind.
The area in front of Black Marine (Bait Shop) - good for pike and crappie (sometimes).
Rollaway Bay area - good for pike and crappie and bluegills (sometimes).

Come on up and enjoy the lake in the winter time - it's nice, no matter if the fish are biting or not.

I was mostly thinking about crappie and pike and I think I have fished out in front of the bait shop and I had pretty good luck up there. I think that's were ill go just because I have some experience with the area. Also I wondering how common musky are up there because the last time I came up I watched a guy next to me pull a 50incher out and I was hoping I might be that lucky too

markz5 - read this thread in the general section to keep up to date on the ice. No one is going to post about good ice until there is some. http://www.blacklakeny.com/forum/viewto ... f=1&t=1835
The lake is quite a ways from generally good ice. Look at the first week in January - usually.

Yesterday was the first day of decent ice in a long time. Solid in the windblown spots, but still soft in areas with some snow. Fishing has been a little slow for me though. Only five flags all day...one dud, one ran with it then dropped it, 3 little pike.

I'd like to know more about this too. Another site posted this pic suggesting it may be a Black Lake Pike.
