Re: First Ice Contest
I pick 28 November, 2014. I'm banking on global warming....er cooling. I'm not sure what I mean...just that Hard Water will come early this year...I'd bet the farm on it (if I owned a farm, that is).

PS Haven't been to Black Lake for three summers since accepting a temp work assignment from my company to a location in southern PA. I retire in December, 2014 and anticipate spending tons of time at Black Lake all of warm-weather-2015. Can't wait!

Re: First Ice Contest
First real snow of the season - that should put a chill in the water Some of the swamps and small ponds around here have been "skimmed" over with ice - won't be too long -

Not much over an inch or two. Waiting to see what the lake effect might bring us the next two days. Looking like we might escape most of it.

Re: First Ice Contest
Well, T\this is the first morning I see skim ice on the lake. I'm looking down the lake and it's in the cove, before Snake Island. I'm just a bit north of Upper Big Bay. Won't be long now. Earlier than last year.

Re: First Ice Contest
Looks like Tori's woolly caterpillar prediction of a mild winter is off a bit...at least so far. And we're not interested in snow at this point...it becomes an insulator pretty quickly. My date is looking better and better as long as this cold snap continues! I see some ice along the shoreline of one of the webcams. Cold air keep on comin'! Papa wants that BIG prize.
P.S. Plus Phil's happiest when he's drillin' through that hard water.

Ha Ha - Snow is OK before the ice comes. I look at it like this: Falling snowflakes into the lake will reduce the water temp and get it closer to freezing! Think of it like pouring a cup of cold water from your tap into 3 quarts of boiling waterv - it imediately quits boiling -

Re: First Ice Contest
Of course you're right Phil about the snow hitting the water and cooling it down. My main concern at this point is that some of these guys are going to build big bonfires, pump lake water through the copper tubing coils from their hooch stills and heat up the lake water, thereby ruining my chance of getting the BIG prize.
I wouldn't put it past Tori to drive up to the lake this weekend from Rochester to do exactly that! And here I am stuck wayyyy down here in Lancaster, PA unable to do a thing about it.
May Mother Nature prevail! Come on ice!!!

Re: First Ice Contest
More skim ice since yesterday. Looking past Snake Island, the skim ice appears to go right across the lake. It's white with snow. Also along my shore line,(down lake side), there is skim ice out about 30 feet. If it wasn't so windy on this point, it would probably be on both sides. Will keep up-dating.
