Fishing 7/25 - 7/28

Post by fishnick » Tue Jul 28, 2015 3:13 pm

Fishing has been tough, but still beats work hands down! The small mouth are running large and the large mouth are running small. Go figure. The pike have been short striking lately making for less hooked fish. We have one beatiful thick 32" Northern (8-10lbs) and LM up to 17" and a number of fat SM in the16-17" range. Hope to increase the numbers and size the next couple of days. Using rubber worms, rattle traps, crank baits and spinner baits. All have worked at times. All fish returned to fight another day!

Nice Northern! 16-17" smb sound like of boatload of fun too. I spent a week there late June, early July and noticed similar size with the bass. Other than one 6 lb or so largemouth, we didn't get many other bass over 3 lbs. Maybe you will find the big ones before your trip ends. Enjoy your fishing!

Sounds fun to me. That's a good pike. What's the water temp? Strange more smallmouth than largemouth with warmer water temps. Thanks for the report.
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

You can find small mouths around any of the rocky points and around the islands on the lake. The well defined buoy areas that mark rock hazards are always good areas to find them also. The available Black Lake Hotspots map does a good job of identifying these areas. Should be able to find it at the local bait shops or at a Gander Mountain, Dick's Sporting Goods or Cabella's. There is a Gander Mountain in Watertown just off I81 or try Chapman's or the Loghouse shops on the lake. Good luck.
